The undergarments known as Granny Panties are making the headlines. The knickers drew comparisons to those worn by Renee Zellweger in the 2001 rom-com Bridget Jones Diary. It would be recalled that in a memorable moment, Hugh Grant had ripped off Renee’s skirt to reveal the lingerie, which Grant then deemed “absolutely enormous panties.”

Now, the high-waisted, made-in-Italy undies leave a lot to the imagination and are now selling for a cool $225.

Balenciaga, the historical European fashion house known for crafting its bags for Kate Moss and dressing the Hollywood elite, including Kim Kardashian, has briefed that the new collection comes in several practical colors, white, brown, beige, and an especially fetching light beige. The brand also has several variations on granny panties for sale at a cheaper process, such as the slip low-waist panty, selling for $150.

According to Colleen Hill, author of Exposed: A History of Lingerie,” while the granny panties might remind some of their elders, they’re pretty modern.

Hill, the curator of costume and accessories at the Museum at FIT, claimed the panties are tame in more ways than one. She added: “Sexiness today is about being comfortable and confident in your own skin. Over the past decade, we’ve witnessed an interest in lingerie styles that promote body positivity and ease of wear over traditionally sexy or risqué styles. There is also a sexiness in not taking yourself too seriously.”

However, this isn’t the first time Balenciaga made headlines with unusual undies.  In September 2021, the fashion house had been heavily slammed online for selling a pair of sweatpants named Trompe-L’Oeil. The collection had boxers woven inside. On social media, particularly on Twitter, people accused the fashion house of racism, especially for gentrifying sagging.
