Shane Burcaw was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a neuromuscular disease that causes muscles to deteriorate over time. Since age two, he’s been using an electric wheelchair and could barely move his legs, arms, and hands. Burcaw met with Hannah Aylward [his now-wife] after she reached out online, and the pair have been in a relationship ever since.
Shane Burcaw and his wife Hannah Aylward took to YouTube to reveal cruel trolls mock their s*x life.
Shane was born with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and has used a wheelchair since the age of two.
In September 2020, the duo tied the knot, but as their romance blossomed, they became victims of criticism due to their inter-abled affair. Taking to YouTube, on an episode of StyleLikeU What’s Underneath: Couple Series, the couple in the video captioned “laughing At Your Ableist BS” stripped down all to open up about their style, self-image, s*x life, and identity.

But so far, they regularly receive abuses and criticisms due to their inter-abled relationship.
Hannah told the cameras: “We definitely get a lot of comments from straight men thinking it’s not fair that I’m with Shane and that I should be with them. They perceive I can’t have sex in their very limited, missionary; man f**ks woman [way]. They think that is the be-all-end-all of s*x.”
On an episode of StyleLikeU, the pair stripped down to open up about their self-image, sexuality, and identity.
“We definitely get a lot of comments from straight men thinking that it’s not fair that I’m with Shane and that I should be with them,” Hannah said.
She noted during the 23-minute interview that these men would often describe to her in a great deal how they would have s*x with her because they assume Shane can’t be physically intimate. While most people also thought Hannah is either Shane’s relative or caregiver, the pair are often met with awkward comments and gushing when they reveal they’re married.
Shane said that due to his condition, men often assume that he can’t have s*x, but this isn’t true.
He stated: “It doesn’t look like what you see in the movies, but I can totally do it.”
“Little do they know,” Shane said on the show and added that their intimacy benefits from his disability and that their intimacy is not just him enjoying it. He stated: “It doesn’t look like what you see in the movies, but I can totally do it.” Shane then said that although he can’t move physically as non-disabled men yet, it doesn’t cause issues in the bedroom.
Shane explained that although he can’t move physically, this doesn’t cause issues in the bedroom.
“When we are in bed together, I can ask her, ‘will you roll me towards you’ or ‘can you move my arm so I can reach your neck or cheek.”
He continued: “I am more often than not, the initiator. A non-disabled mum might come up to Hannah and start rubbing her shoulders, and I just say, ‘hey, do you wanna go have s*x? And I know that probably shakes people as like ‘oh that must be not romantic’ but take our word for it. After I ask that, we are romantic. When we are in bed together, I can ask her, ‘will you roll me towards you’ or can you move my arms so I can reach your neck or cheek.”
Hannah revealed Shane uses his voice in ways that other people might just physically do something.
And while Shane can ask her to move him into specific positions, they also have secret language.
Hannah also explained that, in general, Shane uses his voice in ways that other people might just physically do something. She revealed that although Shane can ask her to move him into specific positions, they also have a secret language for such kinds of requests. “We have a shorthand for all of these things – he doesn’t say can you move my legs under your legs? We just know. I feel like I know his body and preferences, as well as I know my own.”

The couple is so comfortable that their relationship works perfectly, and they trust one another.
The couple is comfortable with each other, their relationship works perfectly, and they trust one another. Due to his disability, Shane has often been made to feel like a burden, but with Hannah, things are entirely different. Shane shared: “I feel for the first time in my life that I’m not a burden because Hannah is wholly there for me and doesn’t feel burdened by me.”
As a result of his disability, Shane has often been made to feel like a burden, but with Hannah, things are different.
Their 23-minute video has since racked up 237,590 views and 14,000 likes on YouTube.
However, Hannah admitted she does get bothered by the online comments that accuse them of faking their relationship, whereas her husband can shrug them off. She noted several people believe they are a couple but assume Hannah must be deeply damaged in some way to want to be with a disabled man. But so far, the couple insisted their relationship, including their sex life, is fulfilling for both of them.

But then, Hannah has insisted their relationship, including their s*x life, is fulfilling for both of them.
Aren’t they inspiring?
Another said: “I have followed Shane and Hannah for years. My husband is also in a wheelchair, and it’s so nice to see other integrated couples have deep, meaningful love.” While a third stated: “They are the most real couple there is. Shane has never been a burden, and he has supported her emotional needs. So glad they were featured on this program.”
